Dear Ms. Kazimova,
By means of this letter I would like to confirm the points I have discussed with you in our pleasant meeting of November 19th, 2008.
In this meeting you mentioned the good contacts you have with Baku Slavic University, located in Baku, Azerbaijan. We talked especially about the good quality of the language studies there and the fact that it is not yet possible to study the Dutch language at Baku Slavic University. What I learnt from you is that the university might be interested in starting up a program in Dutch language, in particular Dutch language acquisition and perhaps also Dutch linguistics and literature.
As a Professor of Dutch as a Second Language at the University of Amsterdam I am very pleased to hear about these plans and I would be interested to become involved in discussing these plans further with you and/or with the assigned person(s) of Baku Slavic University. These discussions could include how to set up a program for Dutch, making an outline for a curriculum, the required competencies of the teachers, establishing learning goals for the course(s), and so on.
The University of Amsterdam has good experiences with similar programmes at foreign universities inside and outside of Europe. Our university is the only university with a master programme in Dutch as a Second Language, of which I am the coordinator. We have designed all kinds of language teaching materials, teacher training courses and are very active in research on foreign and second language acquisition (for detailed information I refer you to my website: http://home.medewerker.uva.nl/f.kuiken/).
I hope that during your next trip to Azerbaijan you can fulfill the role of intermediary between the expertise I can offer and the demands of Baku Slavic University to start a program in Dutch. Looking forward to hearing from you after your visit to Baku, best,
Professor of Dutch as a Second Language
